DIY Leather Poetry Journal Materials
- One 11.5-by-8.75-inch rectangle of thin leather or leather-look fabric
- Eight sheets of 8.5-by-11-inch, 24-pound cream paper
- 24 inches of waxed linen thread
- One blunt bookbinding needle
- Awl and scrap cardboard
- Bone folder or smooth spoon
- Metal ruler, pencil, and cutting mat
- Rotary cutter or sharp utility knife
- Four small binder clips

Keep the cutting mat on a stable surface. Retract the blade immediately after every cut, cut away from your body, and keep fingers behind the metal ruler.
Fold the Pages and Cut the Cover
Stack the eight sheets with their edges aligned. Fold the entire stack in half across the 11-inch width, then run the bone folder firmly along the crease. Unfold and refold each sheet individually if the center becomes bulky, keeping all folds nested in the same direction.
Square the leather to 11.5 by 8.75 inches. Place the folded signature in the center with the leather extending about 1/4 inch beyond the paper on every edge. Adjust before cutting; a soft leather cover does not need a separate spine allowance.

Punch Three Aligned Spine Holes
Nest the pages inside the leather and secure all four corners with binder clips. Open the journal to the center fold. Mark one hole at the exact midpoint, then mark another hole 2.5 inches above and a third 2.5 inches below it.
Place scrap cardboard underneath. Hold the awl vertically and press through the paper and leather at each mark. Never hold the journal in your hand while punching. Check that all three holes appear on the outside spine before removing the clips.
Sew the Three-Hole Pamphlet Stitch
Thread the needle without tying a knot. Start inside the journal and pass through the center hole, leaving a 3-inch tail. Enter through the top hole, exit through the bottom hole, then return inside through the center.
The two thread ends should sit on opposite sides of the long interior stitch. Pull until snug but not tight enough to tear the paper. Tie a square knot over the long stitch and trim both tails to 1 inch.
