How to Make a No-Sew T-Shirt Tote Bag at Home

Got an old T-shirt lying around? Don’t toss it! With just a few simple cuts and knots, you can turn it into a functional, eco-friendly tote bag—no sewing machine required. Whether you’re heading to the market, gym, or beach, this DIY tote is perfect for reducing waste and giving your clothes a second life.

What You’ll Need:

  • An old T-shirt (the thicker the fabric, the sturdier the bag)

  • Sharp scissors

  • Ruler or measuring tape

  • Chalk or a washable marker

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Choose Your T-Shirt
Pick a T-shirt you no longer wear. Larger shirts work best for roomier bags, while smaller shirts make compact totes.

2. Cut Off the Sleeves
Lay the shirt flat. Cut off both sleeves along the seam. These openings will become the handles of your tote.

3. Cut Out the Neckline
Use a bowl or plate to trace a semi-circle below the neckline. Cut it out to create the bag’s opening.

4. Trim the Hem (Optional)
If your T-shirt has a thick hem at the bottom, cut it off to make knotting easier.

5. Mark and Cut Fringe at the Bottom
Turn the shirt inside out. Using your ruler, mark lines about 1 inch apart and 3 inches high along the bottom. Cut both the front and back layers along these lines to create fringe.

6. Tie the Fringe
Tie each front and back strip together in a double knot. Once all strips are tied, you’ll notice small holes between knots—close these by tying adjacent strips together across seams for a more secure bottom.

7. Turn It Right Side Out
Flip your bag right side out. Voila! You’ve got a durable, no-sew tote ready to use.

Optional Customizations:

  • Add iron-on patches or fabric paint for personality.

  • Cut the straps longer for a crossbody version.

  • Layer with fabric lining for added structure (requires sewing).

Making a tote bag from an old T-shirt is a fun, creative way to upcycle while crafting something truly useful. Plus, it’s beginner-friendly and kid-safe—perfect for family DIY days.
