Safety and Adjustments
The NHS sitting-exercise guide recommends a stable chair, feet flat on the floor, and gradual increases in repetitions before building a safe longer routine.
- Stop immediately for sharp pain, dizziness, numbness, tingling, new weakness, or pain traveling into an arm or leg.
- Keep the movement small after a long period of sitting.
- Do not use the chair or thigh to force a deeper twist.
- This routine is general fitness information, not diagnosis, treatment, or rehabilitation.
- Recent spinal surgery, fracture, or unexplained severe back pain requires individualized medical guidance.
Combine this routine with desk stretches for the neck and back, desk stretches for tight hips, or upper-back exercises.
Seated Spinal Twist FAQ
Should my hips turn with my shoulders?
Keep the pelvis mostly forward and allow a small comfortable rotation through the rib cage. Do not pin the hips rigidly if that causes discomfort.
How far should I twist?
Stop at the first mild sense of resistance. A larger range is not necessary for a useful movement break.
Can I use a rolling office chair?
No. Move to a stable chair without wheels so the base cannot rotate or slide during the exercise.
